Aquileia - an ancient center of trade

Aquileia (Italian: Aquileia) is a small town in north-eastern Italy, located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It is known primarily for its ancient history and rich archaeological heritage, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

HISTORY

Aquileia was founded as a military colony in 181 BC. It quickly became an important commercial and military center. Due to its location, Aquileia was a major communication and trade hub. After numerous invasions by various tribes, Aquileia never regained its importance and power from before the invasions. In 1998, due to its historical and archaeological importance, it was included on the UNESCO list.

St. Basilica Euphemia (Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta)

St. Basilica Euphemia, also known as the Patriarchal Basilica, is the main monument of Aquileia. Its roots date back to the 4th century, although the current building dates back to the 11th century. The basilica is famous for its magnificent floor mosaics from the 4th century, which are among the most important examples of early Christian art. The mosaics depict biblical scenes and Christian symbols.

Bell tower (Campanile)

Next to the basilica there is an impressive bell tower, measuring 73 meters high. It was built in the 9th century and served not only a religious but also a defensive function. Climbing to the top of the bell tower, you can admire a panoramic view of Aquileia and the surrounding area.

Roman Forum and Ruins

Aquileia is full of remains of ancient Roman architecture. It is worth visiting the ruins of the ancient defensive walls, the Roman theater, the baths and the cemetery. The Roman Forum in Aquileia was the central square of the ancient city, where political, social and commercial life was concentrated. You can still see the remains of columns, building foundations and fragments of cobbled roads. This place gives you an idea of ​​the scale and importance of Aquileia in Roman times.

Roman Port

The remains of the ancient Roman port of Aquileia, located on the Natisone River, testify to the city’s importance as an important commercial and communication center. You can see fragments of quays, warehouses and other port structures.

Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale)

The Archaeological Museum of Aquileia has a rich collection of artifacts from excavations in the city. There are, among others: mosaics, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry and everyday objects from Roman times. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the life and culture of the ancient inhabitants of Aquileia.
